2014 RECAP AND RESULTS
The fourth annual Michael Chang Tennis Classic tournament was a huge success raising over $90,000 for charity! This year the money was donated to HomeAid Orange County to aid in its fight against homelessness and the Chang Family Foundation for their community outreach programs.
The July 2014 tennis event had about 1,500 attendees. Some came to compete, some to play in the MCTC tennis clinic but the greatest draw was an evening exhibition match featuring Michael Chang and his protégé Kei Nishikori as they took on hometown favorites Cecil Mamiit and Taylor Dent. The Newport Beach Tennis Club served a courtside dinner to the MCTC sponsors and offered a buffet dinner to the numerous spectators who came to watch.
NBTC also hosted a player party on the Saturday night of the sanctioned three day tournament with dinner and dancing late into the night.
In the main MCTC tournament, winning the Men’s Open Singles was Dean Jackson who defeated Jochem Hoefnagels, 6-3, 6-4. In the Women’s Open Singles, Meredith Xepoleas defeated Trang Huynh, 6-2, 6-3. And in the Mixed Open Doubles, Stefan Menichella and Mazy Watrous beat Sebastian Leon and Xavier Smith.
In the high school division Ryan Dugan of Santa Margarita Catholic High School won the boys’ singles and Caroline Lockwood of Holy Names Academy in Washington won the girls’ singles. Taking the title in boys doubles was Maxwell Boice and Ricky Kurtz and in girl’s doubles was Alisa Ogranovich and Mikayla Rinker.
