The Fifth Annual Michael Chang Tennis Classic once again left its mark on Orange County and the tennis community. Two July weekends that included a tennis clinic, pro exhibition match, USTA tournament and a high school division adds up amazing tennis and $130,000.00 raised for charity! The money is being given to HomeAid Orange County to aid in its fight against homelessness and the Chang Family Foundation for its community outreach programs.

The July 2015 tennis tournament had 607 USTA players registered for its 2 ½ days of competition in Newport Beach and another 65 players in MCTC’s high school division that ran consecutively at the University of California, Irvine.

In recent years the Michael Chang Tennis Classic has found great notoriety with its annual pro exhibition match which once again included former world #2 Michael Chang and current world #4 Kei Nishikori playing against local favorites Taylor Dent and Cecil Mamiit. The four pros took to center court at the Newport Beach Tennis Club entertaining the crowd with their skills and on court antics. At courtside tables tournament sponsors enjoyed a three course dinner, while tennis enthusiasts once again filled the surrounding stands.

The following weekend in the main tournament, winning the Men’s Open Singles was Cameron Norrie who defeated Emmanuel Mensah, 6-4, 6-4.  In the Women’s Open Singles, Katsiaryna Zheltova defeated Kareena Manji, 6-1, 6-1.  And in the Men’s Open Doubles, Hudson Blake and Trevor Johnson beat Joseph Di Giulio and Junior Ore, 6-4, 6-4.

In the high school division of MCTC Nick St. John of Santa Margarita Catholic High School won the boys’ singles and Mary Brascia of Capo Valley High School won the girls’ singles.  Taking the title in boys’ doubles was Rhett Andrews and Nick St. John of Santa Margarita Catholic High School and in girls’ doubles was Brooke Kenerson and Paige Kenerson of Corona del Mar High School.

With the support of its generous sponsors, some of which include Tustin Hyundai, Vinome, VantaQuest, TriGuard Management, Northwestern Mutual, Affinity Investments, Apriem Advisors, and Prince of Peace, the Michael Chang Tennis Classic has become one of the most popular USTA sanctioned tennis tournaments in Southern California.
