Tennis players and tournament sponsors from around Southern California assisted the Michael Chang Tennis Classic in raising $20,000 for charity!
A sold out tennis clinic with Michael Chang and a group of top notch pros kicked off the 2nd Annual Michael Chang Tennis Classic (MCTC) at the Newport Beach Tennis Club! Twelve courts of players received instruction from tennis greats including Michael Chang and his brother Carl, Phil Dent, Debbie Graham, Eliot Teltscher, Kim Po, John Norton, Adam Davidson, Mike Edles, Rob Rye, Jerry Yu, and Anne Yelsey.
In addition to the kick-off clinic and three day tournament, MCTC added a new non-sanctioned high school division this year for players outside the top 75 ranking in So. Cal. The high school players were guaranteed two rounds, received player bags, and personalized bag tags. A highlight of the tournament for the high school players was a motivational speech from Michael Chang and Olympic gold medalist swimmer, Kaitlin Sandeno during a lunch time event sponsored by Taco Bell. Finalists and winners of the tournament received trophies and scholarship money for their high school’s tennis programs.
In the main tournament, winning the Mens Open Singles was Clarke Spinosa who defeated Andrew Raphaelson 6-2, 6-2. In the Womens Open Singles, Kaitlyn Christian took down Mazy Watrous, 6-1, 6-1. And in the Mixed Open Doubles, Martel Campell and Kim-Trang Nguyen beat Trent Aaron and Meg Simons 7-5, 6-3.
This year’s kick-off clinic, adult, and high school tournaments drew in big name sponsors including Kia Motors, VantaQuest, Nestle, Prince of Peace, Tiger Balm, Yogurtland, Reebok, and Babolat. The money raised from the 2012 tournament has been donated to two charity recipients, Habitat for Humanity of Orange County and the Chang Family Foundation. MCTC 2013 has been slated for July 26-28, with the kick-off clinic set for July 20th.
